WHITT'S END: 10.2.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*The fall of the female from Metroplex media continues, as Emily Jones and Gina Miller are leaving their respective TV stations. Jones, best known for her work as a Rangers' reporter, is done on Fox Sports Southwest at the end of this month. And Miller, sports co-anchor at CBS 11 and TXA 21, announced she is temporarily leaving TV. Jones, at FSSW for nine years, says she wants to find a better family balance while Miller, at CBS for eight years, plans to pursue "entrepreneurial projects." Miller recently asked for my advice on starting her own website, so perhaps she's merely expanding her empire in a different direction? Those two departures add to a 2013 that has already seen Jasmine Sadry, Sybil Summers and Jane Slater fired from 105.3 The Fan and Kelly Webster ousted at 103.3 FM ESPN. For viewers and listeners, this isn't a good trend. At all.

*Still wanna bash Tony Romo? He's thrown eight touchdowns and only one interception. Just think, your quarterback could be named Josh Freeman. Or even Matt Schaub, who has thrown a Pick Six in three consecutive games for the reeling Texans.

*Michael Jordan says that, in his prime, he could beat LeBron James 1-on-1. "I don't think I would lose," he said, "other than to Kobe Bryant, because he steals all of my moves." Jordan has six rings, accented by six Finals MVPs. Are we really having this discussion? LeBron is bigger and stronger. But as for basketball acumen and refined skills like dribbling, shooting, scoring and defense, Jordan has every advantage. Gimme Jordan in 5.

*I'll give you a new iPhone tip, but I need some help in exchange. Deal? If you downloaded the new ios7, you can now see exactly when you sent/received a text instead of just a conversation approximation. Simply swipe left on a text and, bam, the exact time. You're welcome. Now, help me with this: How the heck do I delete an iCloud account? When I attempt this in Settings, it must first turn off the "Find My iPhone" function, which requires the password to the email I originally used to set up the account. That's my CBS email and, as many of you remember, I don't exactly have access to that anymore. How do I kill something that's already dead? Advice?

*Wasn't ready for the Rangers' season to end. Hard for me now to get invested or, honestly, really even interested in baseball's post-season. Nor am I ready for what's next on the sports calendar: Hockey. As in, quick, who won the Stanley Cup last year? Yeah, me neither. Blah humbug.

   *Hot.

   *Not.

  1. Pedro Martinez...thought it was me. Might was well be making airplane/motorboat noises.

  2. Be very careful on this iCloud thing. You could lose your contacts, and I've seen where it will duplicate or even triple your contacts when setting back up. From an IT perspective, when you left CBS, did they forward your email to someone else (manager, HR, etc)? It's very simple to have it activated by IT and get your iCloud stuff moved to another email, but I doubt you'd want to go down that road. Best bet is to contact Apple support, as there doesn't seem to be an obvious fix out there.

  3. Come on man - Chicago BlackHawks won Stanley Cup in 2013. They had a great Banner-raising ceremony last night. Now....I couldn't tell you who won the last Super Bowl...yeah, yeah, I know - that's just me!

  4. Darn! I was pretty excited when I filled up at $2.84/Gallon last night. You win!

  5. Metroplex media - getting younger at that position?

Hockey - Yes, I realize I'm one of maybe 5 people in this town who still care, but the Stars home opener is Thursday. I will be there with beer in hand.

Jay Z - He's either going to come out looking like a genius with the Cano contract, or he's going to look like Master P negotiating for Ricky Williams. My guess is the guy isn't even involved in the negotiations. He's probably hired a team of lawyers for that, and he's just the executive funding the deal.

Marathon running - you don't care about the NHL, but you care about marathon running? Seriously?

  6. I still hear Kelly everyday giving the updates on ESPN is she supposed to be gone at a certain point?

  7. Thanks for the IPhone tip.

  8. Berkman was bad, but not his biggest gaffe. Brad Wilkerson will always top my list as biggest flops, mainly because we kept running him out there everyday.

  9. How to delete an iCloud from a iPhone...

    http://9to5mac.com/2013/07/13/how-to-safely-delete-an-icloud-account-from-your-mac-or-ios-device/

I work in IT and I know that the email account that you had at CBS is property of CBS....and that includes all the emails, contacts, and attachments. With that said, if you were cool with the IT guys or your former boss (doubtful on that one) then maybe they can forward your email to another account...but legally speaking....they don't have't to.

I agree with you Richie on the Jon Daniels thing, but there are a few other reasons besides Jon Daniels' lack of moves as to why the Rangers are sitting on their couches in October.

    1. Career low stat seasons for guys like David Murphy and Mitch Moreland. Had they performed as good or better than they normally perform, maybe Jon Daniels doesn't look so guilty.

    2. Pitching merry-go-round. The Rangers used 11 starters this year...... losing their number 2 (Harrison) and Colby Lewis never returned for ONE pitch. Trotting out guys like Ross Wolfe....etc....will not win you a division, much less a pennant.

    3. Nellie Cruz suspension. He was the only guy that was consistently hitting with power and producing RBI's. If he had chosen to fight his suspension, we might have made the playoffs... But he did what was best for Nellie Cruz....can't say I blame him.

With the Peyton Manning show coming to town, the Cowboys are about to get TORCHED.... I will be rooting for the boys, but deep down inside, my hatred of Jerry Jones burns hotter and hotter....He is the head of the organization....and his EGO will continue to be the biggest hurdle this team will have to overcome. We as fans are being held hostage by this man as he continues to drive this franchise into the ground.....And when the Cowboys season is over, and they are 8-8 or worse, he will fire a bunch of coaches, hire some more puppets, and continue ad nauseum.

  10. So, Elf is working for dallasmavericks.com and Slater is working for dallascowboys.com. Good for them. They really do seem like the nicest people, but they were awful on the radio, so I am glad they found other work.

  11. Sorry - but Jasmine, Sybil, and Jane are several levels below Gina and Emily. Comparing the 3 FAN ladies to them is disrespectful to Gina and Emily.

  12. I was listening to Galloway today and would hit the Ticket during commercials. Corby was telling some story about going somehere, I swear to god, it was so boring I could hardly listen. It could have been about Notre Dame game. I switched back about 5 different times, and he was still talking about it. Does anyone like the sound of their voice more than this guy? Pa-Paw

  13. Just being a butthead, but no way is a marathon a more athletic event than sprinting. Is the pace for the amount of time to complete a marathon more impressive? I'd say so. When you become older and have lost your athleticism you become a distance runner. For crying out loud, Bob Sturm and Oprah Winfrey completed marathons!

    1. But they didnt complete those marathons at 4:43 mile pace. I get your point, but Richie makes a good one too. In comparison we won't get close to professional athletes but I can't run one 4:43 mile let alone 26.2. I would say you are right in it not being more athletic, but damn that is impressive.

  14. Gina is asking you for career advice? Wow, thought she was smarter than that.

  15. I really hope you respond Richie. I really want to know your beef with hockey. It is a great sport and very entertaining, just not sure why most sports guys down here hate it.

    1. Most guys down here don't "hate" hockey as much as they're "indifferent" about it. Dallas is a winners town, and the Stars have sucked for a half decade now (and I say this as a season ticket holder).

Let the the Stars string a winning season together, and Dallas will care about them again.
