WHITT'S END: 11.18.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*This morning the Cowboys woke up for the first time this season without at least a share of first place in the NFC East. Still think they'll play in their third consecutive NFC East Championship Game, this year's version on Dec. 29 against the Eagles at AT&T Stadium. The Giants? I know they've won four in a row, but the string of quarterbacks they've faced? Josh Freeman (Vikings), Matt Barkley (Eagles), Terrelle Pryor (Raiders) and Scott Tolzien (Packers). Not convinced they're making some magical run.

*Mavs lost an entertaining, close game to the Heat Friday night, making it five straight losses to Miami since Game 6 of the NBA Finals. They'll also go at least 1,000 days between playoff-game wins since their title triumph on June 12, 2011.

*Yep, that familiar voice in an unfamiliar place Saturday afternoon was Mark Elfenbein on 103.3 FM ESPN. Nothing concrete or long-term yet, but my good friend Elf will start doing weekends, fill-ins and holidays. With previous tours at The Ticket and The Fan, he's now hit for the Metroplex radio cycle.

*The San Francisco Bat Kid will restore your hope in this cold, cruel world. Well done, 5-year-old cancer survivor Miles Scott. Bravo, Make-a-Wish. And kudos to the 13,000 "volunteers" who showed up to make that the best goose-bumpy moment of 2013.

*Was watching footballs college and pro over the weekend and had this thought: Why are there no black kickers? Before you spout off "Reggie Roby!", I'm talking kickers, place-kickers, the guys you don't see most of the game who then trot out and decide outcomes in the final seconds. Kickers. Couldn't name any. Not one. I was sure I was missing at least a couple. But, actually, there've only been four in the history of the NFL. Explanation, please?

   *Hot (Raquel Welch, age 73).

   *Not (Everybody else, age 73).

  3. ^ Ha! That's greatness.

Also, if this kid who is scoring 138 and 109 is at some bullshit DIII school, why not give him a chance to at least play some big boy b-ball? Hell, he's probably got a year left, give him a scholarship and let's see this warlock in action.

  4. You realize that no Aggies died in a fire from the bonfife tragedy? They died when the bonfire structure they were building collapsed.

    3. Anon 10:11, the Anon 9:55 & 10:22 poster is right if your going to "report". There were no fire related deaths. There will be correction on this by day's end.

  6. That kid at Grinnell is nothing but a show to get that college name out there. They did this last year. The coach does this every year against some little college and the only plan is for the team to feed this kid the ball.

No way that this would happen against real competition.

    1. It may be just a "show", but the kid is making 24 of 48 3-pointers in a live game against real defenders. Don't know a lot of players who could do that with no defense.

  8. Why the Cowboys will not be playing for the "NFC East Championship" this year.

The reason the Cowboys will not be playing in the "NFC East Championship" is because when they play that final regular season game against the Eagles, they wll be 6-9 or 7-8 if they are lucky. The reason they will not make the playoffs AGAIN this year can be attributed to their lack of depth. Their lack of depth can be attributed to two things. Bad drafting and poor cap management. Bad drafting and poor cap managment can be attributed to bad talent evaluation and ill advised contracts and trades respectively. The bad talent evaluation, ill advised contracts, and trades can be attributed to Cowboys team management. Cowboys team management is headed by the GM Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones the GM must answer to Jerry Jones the owner. This is top of the pyramid folks...and this the source of the Cowboys problems. Unfortunately for fans, this dynamic means the problem will remain....and so will Jerry Jones until he dies....only his death will set the Cowboys free..... and then we get Stephen....who will be hard pressed to do much worse.

    3. As compared to "High Times" there anon 731? And personally I am a winner in life's lottery, too bad you will never have what I got.

    4. Clever come back there, captain douche. I don't read "High Times." And if the payout of life's lottery is stupidity, then yes, you've won.

    5. The Fetish Ball was fun and entertaining as always, but nothing really newsy to report.

  10. As for Jimmie Johnson, I think the driver DOES matter. If all it took was good equipment, Danica Patrick or Junior would be winning all the time instead of finishing in the bottom 15 (Danica) most weeks. Junior hasn't won a single race in over a year. It does help having a great car, but there are several teams with the best equipment (Johnson's teammates, for example) that don't manage to accomplish what he does. We should all be a little more respectful of what he has achieved..

    1. I agree completely, he may or may not be the best driver, but him and Chad Knauss know how to get the most points possible. I am not a fan of Jimmie Johnson or the NASCAR Chase, but he has made a living at making it work for him.

  11. Hitting for the metroplex sports radio cycle doesn't ever work out unless you end at the Ticket, which I can't recall ever happening. Didn't work out for Greggo. It's not going to work out for Ben and Skin once they get shit canned from the Fan later next year and it's not going to work out for Elf I'm afraid.

Richie, did you try getting a job at espy radio before they got taken over by Cumulus? No way Jeff Catlin would hire you now, but before hand you might have been able to land there.

    2. Nope. Like I said before, since leaving The Fan I haven't even really thought about getting back in radio.

    3. I liked Elf too, but his show was much better with Josh Lewin. I was hoping Mike Bassick was going to be put on there with Elf, and I am really glad they put him in the lineup with G-bag Nation. Slater didn't show me that she knew enough for me to want to listen to her. The worst was when she got into arguments with other people, her points of view were usually on the weak side. After they were let go all of the other hosts talked about how hard she worked and that is at least admirable.
