  1. Rather presumptive to assume there is "another reason" to appreciate Richie's president; please share the first one.

  2. The only way this makes sense is if Richie has decided to shut down the blog and is just making a cash grab on the way out.

Ignoring the fact that $5/month is ludicrous for the quality/quantity of the content, how is he planning on growing his audience? The die hard Whitt Fans (shudder) have already paid up. There's no way anyone else is joining because they have no idea what they're getting.

So it's either a way to get some extra money before stepping aside due to the stresses of his pizza empire, or Richie is an idiot that doesn't know how to run a business. If it's the latter, I'm sure he'll have plenty of blogging time when the pizza business fails.

    1. I agree 100%. I was actually thinking about that the other day. His teases are aweful. It would be one thing if there were more in depth articles like the two he wrote on Greggo. Basically you are now paying 5 dollars a month for the exact same information that can be found anywhere.

What he should have done was to go a couple weeks or a month with more in depth reporting (if he's capable) and then switch over to a pay model.

  3. Is there something wrong with the comments section lately? I've barely seen any traffic.

  4. @anon 2:11.....What the hell is there to comment on? Two or three blurbs to try and entice the idiots that are willing to pay?

  5. Just checked in to see if Mr. Whitt had decided to go "free" again with the website. I'm a fan and do enjoy reading his stuff, but I'm not going to pay for it. As I've said before, I run a fairly large site -- on that I know gets more traffic than this one -- and there's NO WAY I'd charge folks for access. If you've got a lot of traffic, there are MANY ways to earn revenue without directly charging folks via a pay gate. Frankly, I don't see how in the hell he can grow his site by blocking people out.

Here's hoping he sees the light in 2014 and decides to make the site "open to the public" once again. However, I think he backed himself in a corner and will let the site go before he makes it free again. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

  6. I get what he's doing. The dude's trying to monetize his work. The rest of us do that every day.

I don't begrudge him for it. I just don't think his content is worth $60 a year. I can find the sports things he posts, and misguided political opinions on the web in many other places for free. Interaction in comments section is what made this entertaining for me, but now that's dwindled to almost nothing (and yes, I fully realize RW is not my personal court jester put on the planet to entertain me).

If you think about it from his standpoint though, he's probably not making a lot of money on the ads, simply because if I was an advertiser and you decided to implement a policy to essentially kill the traffic on your site, then I'm yanking my money and investing it elsewhere....unless you're giving it to me for a song.

This means if he gets say, 10 subscribers at $5 a month (Rowdy, Richie's mom, a couple dudes that want to see Sybil in a santa suit, etc.), he's pulling in $50/mo, which may very well be $50 a month more than he was making on it before.

All of us go to work every day trying to monetize our talents. He's no different, except he's 1) Self-employed, and 2) the talent he's trying to monetize is more public than most of us.

Today's free blog is tomorrow's pay site you may or may not choose to visit. Things change.

    1. Totally get that. But I counter with the fact that Mr. Whitt -- if he's pulling in large numbers of "hits" on his site -- can get a lot more via Google Adsense, etc. than asking folks to pay $5/month for his content. You simply can not build up a fan base of readers by making your site "pay per view," if you will.

Now, if this isn't really a money making endeavor and he wants his site to be a place where he and his online "friends" hangout, then that's fine.

Regardless speaking from experience -- I've ran a pretty big fansite for over 15 years now -- a paygate is pretty much a death-nail.

So Ritchie, if you're reading, I suggest...
      Google Adsense
      Gorilla Nation
      Burst Online Ads
      Valueclick Online Ads

  7. I bet $5 this site is shut down shortly after the New Year when he gets hitched.

But I am shocked how it used to be close to 20 people bashing Richie about the paysite now it is averaging around 5. I like the rest periodically check back to see if it is free. I am sure surprised to see HMS still advertising on here.

Good luck Richie. Looks like you are going to need it.
